Kolkata is a wonderful destination for those interested in India’s colonial culture; you can explore the Victoria Memorial, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fort William and Marble Palace, and with many museums throughout the city you’ll be able to learn a great deal about the city’s eventful history and unique culture. The Hooghly River, which runs alongside Kolkata, is best known for its Howrah Bridge, an impressive structure that complements the colonial architecture you’ll find throughout the city itself. For a taste of the weird and wonderful side of Kolkata, you can explore a number of street bazaars in the inner city, notably Gariahat Market, College Street and Hatibagan Market. If you’re buying tickets for the whole family, you may also want to consider a visit to Nicco Park or Marble Palace Zoo for some fun-filled Kolkata adventures with the kids.

Kolkata has a tropical climate; it’s hot and humid, and for many British visitors this can be particularly uncomfortable during India’s summer time, which is April to June. From July to late September temperatures cool down due to it being the monsoon season, but the heavy rain and high humidity can make sightseeing difficult. To get the most out of your trip to Kolkata, it’s recommended to book flights between October and March when the cooler winter weather and drier climate make it easier to explore. To experience authentic Indian festivals you should visit the city during October or November when many festive events take place, including Durga Puja and Diwali.

Since Kolkata is a popular tourist destination there are lots of transport links available between the airport and the city centre, which is only around 17km away. When flights arrive many visitors take prepaid taxis from right outside the international terminal building, whilst others opt to take a bus to the city centre instead, which is a little cheaper. Buses are air-conditioned and therefore very comfortable, and they depart every 15 minutes, which is incredibly convenient. Before booking tickets to the city you must ensure you apply for a visa; to do so you will need to have a passport that is valid for at least 180 days at the time of your visa application. Since the city is warm and humid, lightweight clothes are recommended and, particularly if your flights are during India’s summer months, you’ll need lots of sunscreen to protect you from the intense sun.
