Zimbabwe is a rewarding wildlife destination as well as a country with awe-inspiring landscapes. Visitors can get up close to the thundering waters of the Victoria Falls, explore the dramatic gorges of the Eastern Highlands, and seek out elephants and African wild dogs in Hwange National Park. History enthusiasts can also marvel at the distinctive medieval ruins which help set Zimbabwe apart its surrounding African nations, such as the legendary city of Great Zimbabwe in the south-east, near Lake Mutirikwi.
Victoria Falls forms the largest falling sheet of water in the world. Every minute, around half a million tonnes of the Zambezi River cascades down into the deep gorges beneath. Also known by its local name Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning ‘the Smoke that Thunders’, the falls form part of the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Zimbabwean side offers wonderful views of the falls from its network of rainforest trails. Other ways to enjoy the cascades include sunset cruises, helicopter flights and guided tours with knowledgeable local guides.
