Located in Northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, Mount Kilimanjaro is undoubtedly one of Africa’s most iconic geographical landmarks. Often referred to as ‘the roof of Africa’, the dormant volcano reaches 5,895 metres above sea level at its highest point.
Kilimanjaro is generally considered to be one of the most accessible big-mountain climbs, with around 30,000 people attempting to reach the summit every year. No ropes or technical experience are required, but you’ll need to follow a team of guides and porters to make the high-altitude expedition.
For many, however, appreciating Africa’s highest peak from the surrounding national park is enough. Cape buffalo, elephants and colobus monkeys can be spotted here, and the lush rainforest and heathlands at the foothills of the mountain offer some wonderful trekking routes.
