The Garden Route stretches ribbon-like along the coast of South Africa’s Western Cape, from Mossel Bay to the village of Storms River. The scenic 125-mile route gets its name from the lush forests, verdant hills and brightly coloured wildflowers that characterise the region. The picturesque landscapes here include ancient indigenous forests, sandy beaches and wetlands, lakes and fertile farmland.
There are innumerable sights and detours along the route, from the ostrich farms and cave systems of Oudtshoorn and the culinary hotspot of Knysna, to the hiking routes of Wilderness National Park and the world-class wineries of Stellenbosch. There are several malaria-free game reserves dotted along the journey, which provide plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing.
The route is typically accessed from Cape Town, and the region is known for its small, owner-run guesthouses and farms, where you can expect excellent food and high levels of service. Speak to our travel advisors 24/7 about planning your perfect self-drive or guided Garden Route itinerary.
