This laid-back port town on Morocco’s Atlantic coast is less than three hours west of Marrakesh. It’s a relaxing alternative to its frenetic neighbour, boasting fine sandy beaches, a UNESCO-listed medina dating from the late 18th century, and a large, atmospheric fishing port. Visitors can immerse themselves in labyrinthine souks, browse the many art galleries, and take advantage of the windy conditions by enjoying some windsurfing or kitesurfing.
In the mornings, the harbour is a hive of activity, with fishermen unloading their catches, and a flurry of wooden boats arriving and departing. Stroll along the beach to take in views of the town’s ramparts, and stop for some refreshing mint tea. In the afternoon, wander through the narrow streets of the walled medina to browse local crafts and traditional Moroccan goods. And be sure to try one of the many excellent seafood restaurants.
Hotels in Essaouira range from beach resorts with chic rooftop pools, to boutique converted riads that combine traditional Moroccan design with modern comforts.
