The Laikipia Plateau is an unspoiled wilderness tucked away in the heart of Kenya, known for its breathtaking landscapes, prolific wildlife and unique cultural experiences. Located to the north of Mount Kenya and easily accessible from Nairobi, the region is characterised by vast savannah plains, dramatic escarpments, and riverine forests along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Accommodation here ranges from luxury lodges with spa facilities to more rustic, authentic safari camps.
Laikipia is home to a number of independent and community-run safari parks, some with a strong focus on sustainability. The region is second only to the Masai Mara in terms of wildlife numbers and is home to many endangered species, including the black rhino. Alongside the Big Five - lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo - you're also likely to spot giraffe, impala, oryx and wild dogs.
Travellers can also engage with local communities like the Samburu and Maasai and learn about their traditions, art and way of life. Visit tribal villages, watch traditional dances and shop for unique handicrafts.
