Tierra Maya

Departing from Cancun, make the journey south to Chicanná, stopping en route at the beautiful Bacalar Lagoon, where you will have lunch. Visit Chicanná archaeological site, the remnants of an ancient Mayan city. Chicanná means ‘House of the Serpent’s Mouth’, and the site is known for its doors marked with animal-shaped masks. Check-in to the Eco Village Chicanná hotel.

Make the one-hour journey to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, one of Mexico’s largest protected areas and home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. Continue to the Calakmul archaeological site, an expansive complex of stelae (monoliths) and the towering Great Pyramid. Enjoy a packed lunch after the visit, then depart for Palenque. Overnight at the Villa Mercedes Palenque hotel or similar.

Explore the impressive Mayan ruins of Palenque, shrouded by the Chiapanecan jungle. The most significant temple here is the Temple of the Inscriptions, where explorers discovered Pakal’s tomb with its famous jade mask. Continue to the historic city of Campeche, stopping for lunch en route. Take a tour of the walled city before checking-in to the Gamma Campeche Malecón or similar.

Head northand visit the remains of the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal, including the towering Pyramid of the Fortune Teller. After lunch, travel onwards to the delightful colonial city of Mérida, also known as the White City. Admire the city’s main monuments including the cathedral, the Government’s Palace and the house of Francisco de Montejo. Check-in to the Courtyard by Marriott Mérida or similar for a 2-night stay.

Today you’ll visit the Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, where you can see the production process of henequén thread, Yucatan´s old ‘green gold’. Walking through the Hacienda, you will journey back in time on board small wooden wagons pulled by mules over rails shipped from France in the late 19th century. Enjoy a swim in the clear waters of a cenote (underground chamber), before having lunch in the Hacienda. Return to Merida in the afternoon.

Visit ChichénItzá this morning, the best-restored of the Yucatan’s Mayan sites. See the superb ceremonial ballcourt, El Caracol observatory, the Sacred Cenote and the reclining figure of ChacMool. After lunch at the site, continue towards Cancun and the Riviera Maya, where the tour will end.
